Transcarpathian Water Management implements the state politics in the field of usage, conservation and revival of the water resources in Zakarpattia oblast territory and solves the issues of the population and economy fields provision with water resources together with the local authorities and other oblast’ organizations and institutions.
Water Management also provides implementation of maintenance and repair works of the melioration systems, flood protection water management structures, reservoirs and other objects of the economy systems, maintenance of the inundation protection systems of the territories and settlements, provision of the rational use of the water resources.
Zakarpattia oblast is characterized by specific natural conditions – mountain nature of the territory (80 % - mountains), significant precipitation (from 630 mm in the lowland up to 1900 in the mountains), and the densest hydrographical network in Ukraine (1.7 river km per 1 km? of the territory).
The square of the Ukrainian part of the river Tisza basin, as the Tisza is one of the biggest tributaries of the Danube, is 12.7 thous. km?. The territory of Zakarpattia oblast belongs to the zone of the developed rain activity. Here during the year there are precipitations in 100 mm and more happening over and over again within the short time period, such precipitations are the cause of formation of significant, even catastrophic, floods. Except that there is a limited land fund in the oblast, and the infrastructure objects such as linear structures of the transport and communication are situated in the rivers valleys which lead to increasing in time damages during high floods. The most catastrophic floods in the oblast were in May 1970, October 1974, July 1980, November 1998 and in March 2001.
Since the past the works on the population and territory flood protection have been carried out. At present there are 726 km of the defense dikes, 725 km of the bank-reinforcement on the Tisza and its tributaries. 33 pumping stations with capacity 101 m?/c and melioration systems with the ramified network of the canals 1339 km lengthwise have been constructed for drainage of the lowland.
The automatic informational measuring system for flood forecasting and water resources management in the river Tisza basin (AIMS-“Tisza”) has been created in the territory of Transcarpathian Water Management activity.
Transcarpathian Water Management controls the economy and financial activities of five departmental organizations: Beregovo, Vynogradovo, Mukachevo, Tyachiv, Uzhhorod inter-district departments on water management.
In the system of Water Management there are more than 850 qualified specialists of different professional fields maintaining 1079 units of hydraulic structures, 726 km of the defense dikes, about 1.5 thous. km of canalized channels and hydrotechnical constructions.
